What is Pressure Swing Adsorption?

Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) is a process that separates certain gases from air or a combination of gases under pressure using adsorbents like molecular sieves and zeolites. This process occurs at high pressure and low pressure, where the adsorbent mattress attracts unique elements in the air. As the mattress reaches its maximum capacity, stress decreases, and the adsorbents degrade, releasing the adsorbent-containing components. This process continues until oxygen-enriched air is produced again.

PSA oxygen plants use accelerated stress of four to eight bar(g) and adsorption to separate oxygen from various elements of air. Molecular sieves or zeolites are the primary adsorbents used in these plants. Two vessels, one with dry and compressed air, and the other with adsorption vessels, produce oxygen continuously. The stress in one vessel increases, while the stress in the other vessels decreases. The stress in each vessel is equal before the adsorption or desorption process. This non-stop process ensures uninterrupted and non-stop oxygen production, making it a cost-effective and efficient system.

Adsorbents

Adsorbents in PSA structures are porous materials with high floor area, such as silica gel activated alumina and molecular sieves. Silica gel effectively removes moisture and other adsorbents from gases and liquids. Activated alumina balls are porous spheres that resist thermal shock and abrasion. Molecular sieves, naturally occurring zeolites, are used in various sizes.
